Twenty years ago, Mahurangi Macadamia founders Jan and Nick decided knowing nothing about horticulture was no reason not to pursue their dream of living in the country and establishing a “soil to sale” self-contained Macadamia nut business.
Today, they have 2,000 trees on their orchard on Ridge Road in Mahurangi East. The nuts mature from late March through to mid-August. Harvest begins in Autumn and continues through the Winter.
Jan and Nick transform the macadamia kernel into delicious toasted and raw nut butter, and roasted macadamias infused with blends of herbs and spices. Many customers describe Jan’s macadamia brittle as the best they have ever tasted.
Mahurangi Macadamias has been a regular at the Parnell market for 11 years and the Matakana market for two years, where their products are held in high regard. Has it been worth it? Looking out over the green trees, there is a quiet sense of achievement.
